Ancestral Matter: The 18th-Century Golden Age Revival — Mineral Distemper, Stucco, Artisan Encaustic, & Alchemy

The Legacy of Inma & Aroa | Gustavian & Gold & Legacy Paint

We are a mother and daughter duo guarding a craft that industrialization nearly erased. In our Spanish atelier, we do not manufacture paint; we reclaim the material truth of heritage furniture. Guided by the 18th-century treaties of Spanish masters like Francisco Pacheco and Antonio Palomino, we bring back the ancestral formulas that defined the Golden Age of fine cabinetry. We create living matter, not industrial coatings.

I. Mineral Distemper Powder: The Art of Hand-Padded Application

Our Mineral Tempera (Distemper) is the soul of our atelier. It is a breathable, raw matter formulated to fuse with the wood using traditional finishing techniques.

  • Geological Purity: Crafted with Cal de Morón (UNESCO World Heritage)—the world's purest lime—which we sun-dehydrate ourselves in the Castilian plains. We blend it with La Roda White, a natural calcium carbonate with a mineral luminosity that no modern chemistry can replicate.

  • Hand-Padded Mastery: Unlike industrial paints, our distemper is applied using the Hand-Padding (Muñequilla) technique. This creates a velvet-like mineral satin and a tactile warmth that reveals the depth of our hand-ground pigments.

  • Heritage Binders: Depending on the piece’s history, we bind our matter with activated Casein, Natural Gum Arabic, or Fresh Egg, ensuring the museum-grade reversibility required for high-end restoration.

II. Authentic Mineral Stucco: The Grandeur of Palaces and Convents

Our stuccos are high-density mineral finishes that recreate the textures found in Spain's historical landmarks, from the Alhambra to the solemnity of Castilian convents.

  • Pure Mineral Composition: A dense blend of sun-dried Morón lime, crushed marble, and mica.

  • The Finish: We achieve a profound mineral luster faithful to the faux-marble stuccos of historical churches and palaces. It is a compacted stone finish that radiates light from the density of the mix itself.

III. Artisan Encaustic & Botanical Waxes: The Apiary Ritual

We reject industrial waxes treated with sulfuric acid. Our Encaustic is a commitment to botanical and mineral purity.

  • Hand-Purified Beeswax: We source raw wax directly from local apiaries—a pure mass of wax and honey that we purify by hand, straining it through multiple cycles.

  • Atelier Emulsion: We cold-emulsify our wax with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Artisan Botanical Waxes, and noble resins (Sandarac and Rosin). It creates a "silk-skin" finish that nourishes the wood without sealing the grain.

IV. Historical Alchemy: White Gold and Decanted Ash

This is where technique becomes legend through noble chemistry:

  • Calcined Alum (The White Gold): For centuries, Alum was Europe’s most coveted mineral, nicknamed "White Gold." Monarchs fought for its monopoly as it was the only mordant capable of fixing color eternally. In our workshop, we calcine raw Alum in our own wood-burning stove, obtaining the historical fixative that lets the wood breathe while making the color unalterable.

  • 7-Day Purified Ash: We decant natural ash for a full week, changing the water daily. The result is a noble micro-abrasive and a pH-neutral mineral shadow pigment.

Numbered Collections & The Sensorial Atelier Experience

Our Legacy Paint collections are limited editions (15 to 60 units), prepared with obsessive attention to detail:

  1. Canson Paper Folio: Every box includes a handcrafted manual on Canson paper, sharing our proportions and technical secrets.

  2. Natural Humidity Control: We include a small pouch of rice in every container to ensure our mineral powder arrives in peak condition.

  3. The Scent of the Atelier: We add artisanal wax sequins, scented with essential oils, ensuring that opening each box is a unique sensorial journey into our craft.
